I so needed to read this beautiful reminder today. Thank you for being our Falkor, and reminding us that there is brightness beyond. Damask sounds very interesting and am looking forward to investigating.
There's a section in the second half of Ende's book (which the original film was based on the first half of), in which....and here I try not to give much away....Bastian has been experiencing the wonders of two different (but of course both fantastical) landscapes, one during the day, and one at night. At a certain point he realizes that the landscape which he marveled at during the day could not exist without the landscape he wondered at during the night, losing its own form so that the daytime one could come from it. Each in turn, in fact, in a never-ending cycle, was born from what the other made possible, and then made possible from there, and then made possible from there. They seemed too different, at first, but once he was conscious of the connection, he saw it everywhere...
I think the realms of wonder, of imagination, of dreams, of fantasy and magic....I think them and even the most mundane layer of waking life in this version of reality, are similarly connected. They are a part of each other, and they allow each other to continually grow and evolve....broader and deeper and richer....as they give of themselves and feed into each other, inspiring and inspired and inspiration all there, all needed....
Y'know, I lost most of the coherency of how I meant to explain and express myself about all this, between reading your post earlier and having the chance to comment tonight. ::sigh:: But....perhaps it makes sense anyway?
This was such a lovely comment and elaboration on the story for those that haven't yet read the book. The book itself really does illuminate the deeper meaning of the movie in so many ways. Thank you, Rhi.
What a wonderful read! The Neverending Story is one of my favorite movies, I think many people can attest to that. I remember recording it off of TV once and watching it on VHS until the tape was worn and wouldn't play anymore. I found the movie terrifying at times but overall the message was one we definitely need to keep close, that hope exists and magic is very much alive within us! How exciting to have a giveaway! I will say I'm not familiar with the author or the book, but if you are then I'm excited. Thanks for all the wonderful insights and I'm looking forward to reading more of your work!
Thank you, Jonathan! I always enjoy your input on these subjects and when you share a bit of your life along with it. Our stories and shared histories are what help people to know that there is evidence of magic, and that survival is not only necessary, but possible! <3
Exactly what I believe too. Our experiences are often magical and sometimes we forget that real magic is everywhere if we just take the time to see it. 💜
I saved this post to read "later" - and found it again in the days following our distressing election. I've never seen The Never Ending Story.... time for me to do that
I’ve just finally read this… and it speaks directly to my adult and child heart. This movie was not only my favorite, but my obsession when I was 7. I watched it a few times a week for a year until my sister hid the VHS from me. Its message, the storytelling and characters all had a profound influence on me becoming Me.
I love your words and your Sight. Thank you. I needed it especially today—I was strongly chased by the Nothing yesterday—and these words were a much needed tether 💜
I had also meant to comment on the balance you spoke of… yesterday, when I was feeling the deepest heaviness of the Nothing, a hummingbird flew right in front of my window and flashed the most brilliant fuchsia head I’ve ever seen. And then perched and watched me. I felt such deep joy and gratitude for his presence, and knew he showed up precisely in that moment for a reason.
He’s been visiting the feeder regularly today and not flying away when I watch him.

Your Falkor! What an absolutely beautiful compliment, thank you, Bridget. I am so glad to bring this message of hope and possibility to you today. :)
Ah, G'mork! Childhood trauma revisited!
